Red Mountain Pass - A Scenic Drive From Ouray To The Summit (June 2006)
Here's a picture collection of my drive from Ouray to the Red Mountain Pass summit.
This is just a small part of the very popular adn recommended loop that goes in a circle through Durango, Silverton,
Ouray, Ridgway, Telluride, Rico and Cortez. Adjacent photo: The pictorial begins leaving Ouray heading south
on Highway 550. |

There are many turnoffs for overlooks including this spot a few miles outside of Ouray. A huge waterfall flows under the highway! Beautiful rainbow too! ;) |
Folks, be careful on this highway, especially in the winter. There were a few stretches of road like this one that even got me a little nervous! :p) |
Some beautiful mountains in the background, as we head up towards the Red Mountain Pass summit. |
Near the old mining town of Ironton, there are some beautiful areas with large aspens fields. I just might have to visit this very spot in the fall! ;)
Here are some other pages of this region:

Here are the peaks that are part of the Red Mountain range. Just beautiful! Mining activity was a large part of this area's economy in a different era. |
Folks, I am telling you, the San Juan Mountains are definitely a very special place! |
There it is ... Red Mountain Pass! |

One shot at the summit looking southward on the San Juan County / Silverton side of the pass. |
